Welcome to the Viability Network website!

The Viabilité network is a scientific network led by researchers from INRAE. It was created in 2020 by Isabelle Alvarez, Sophie Martin (LISC, MathNum), Alain Rapaport (MISTEA, MathNum), Francesco Accatino (Sadapt, ACT), and Rodolphe Sabatier (Ecodéveloppement, ACT).

The Viability Network is supported by INRAE's MathNum department and is open to everyone, regardless of their affiliated organization.

The objective is twofold:

  • to facilitate a space for scientific exchange and reflection for researchers interested in the sustainability approach to the study of sustainability (management, sustainable development) and related issues (governance, transition, adaptation, etc.);
  • to promote knowledge of sustainability concepts, methods, and tools among modelers.

The network's operating mode is likely to evolve over time. Currently (2022), we offer seminars/webinars on methodological aspects, as well as introductory and advanced seminars for modelers. We will soon be organizing workshops (for modelers) 

This site offers documentary and video resources, and will be expanded to include bibliographic links and links to platforms (software, sites of interest, forums).

To summarize the approach to sustainability in a few words:

The work of Aubin and his successors on the mathematical theory of sustainability (Aubin 1991, Aubin et al, 2012) has inspired numerous studies on sustainable management and optimal control, particularly at INRAE. The approaches studied within the network focus on the trade-off between dynamics and constraints without directly seeking an optimal solution (initially), unlike traditional approaches to optimal control theory. The advantage of this approach is that it does not impose a trade-off between short-term and long-term considerations, or between different aspects of sustainability.
